Bulgaria to hold presidential elections in November

Xinhua, July 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgaria's National Assembly here on Friday decided that the country will hold regular presidential elections in the first half of November.

The presidential elections will be held on November 6, the parliament said.

However, according to the country's Constitution, "to be elected, a candidate shall require more than one half of the valid ballots, provided that more than half of all eligible voters have cast their ballots in the election."

Should none of the candidates for president be elected, a second round shall be held within seven days between the two top candidates. The winner shall be the candidate who wins the majority of the vote, the constitution says.

At the end of May, current Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said in a statement that he has decided not to run for a second term.

Plevneliev, who won the last presidential elections in Bulgaria in October 2011 as a candidate of the ruling GERB party, said he would not participate in the upcoming presidential elections "for personal reasons." Endit
