Bastian Schweinsteiger retires from German national squad

Xinhua, July 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger announced his retirement from international duty on Friday.

"I have just asked the coach not to nominate me anymore for the national team because I would like to step back," Schweinsteiger said on Twitter.

"I would like to thank the fans, the team, the German Football Association and the coaches," Schweinsteiger wrote.

Schweinsteiger moved to Manchester United in 2015, but a severe knee injury in January barred him from playing for United regularly.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who has made 120 international appearances for Germany over the last 12 years, still has a two-year contract with the Premier League club but was reportedly told the new boss Jose Mourinho that he would not have a position in the team. Endit
