Mexican navy seizes 847 kilos of cocaine off coast

Mexico's navy intercepted two boats off the country's south Pacific coast and confiscated 847 kilograms of cocaine, the Naval Secretariat reported on Wednesday.

"Naval personnel on maritime aerial patrol ... detected two small vessels 104 nautical miles (about 192.6 kilometers) southeast of Acapulco, Guerrero," and reported the sighting to officials, "who immediately took action to intercept them," the navy said.

One boat was carrying 25 sacks containing 752 packets of cocaine, while the other was carrying 25 drums of fuel, eight of which still contained gasoline.

The boats, drugs and three crew members have been turned over to officials at the Public Prosecutor's Office in the port of Acapulco, the navy said.

There has been an increase in the seizure of drugs at sea as a result of the strengthening of maritime area patrol capacity, naval intelligence and monitoring of the coast, the navy said. Enditem
