U.S. reports two more non-travel related Zika cases in Florida

U.S. health officials said Wednesday they are investigating two more possible non-travel related Zika virus cases in Florida, raising further fears that the virus has spread to mosquitoes in the continental United States.

The new cases are in Florida's Miami-Dade and Broward counties, where the investigations into two similar cases, announced last week, are still ongoing. No other such cases have been identified in the continental U.S.

"The investigations into the new cases will begin today and door-to-door outreach and sample collection are ongoing in all cases," the Florida Department of Health said in a statement.

"Residents and visitors are urged to participate in requests for urine samples by the department in the areas of investigation. These results will help the department determine the number of people affected," it said.

Zika spreads to people primarily through mosquito bites, and it can also be spread sexually.

More than 1,400 cases of Zika have been reported in the continental United States, but nearly all are travel-associated cases, only a few acquired the virus through sex with people who contracted it while traveling abroad. Enditem
