Traffic accidents kill 1,919 people in 6 months in Algeria

Xinhua, July 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Altogether 1,919 people were killed and 21,290 others were injured in traffic accidents in Algeria during the first half of 2016, said the National Center for Prevention and Road Safety on Monday.

The figures showed the death toll drops by 187 from a year ago, and averagely 12 people lost their lives in traffic accidents per day from January to June this year, which stands as "a real national tragedy," said the source.

The most tragic road accident so far in 2016 occurred in June, which killed 33 people and wounded 22 others when a transport bus collided with a semi trailer in south Algeria.

Road accidents killed 4,610 people last year, 34 percent of them under 30 years old. A driving license's demerit point system is to become in force, as a step to curb the soaring number of traffic accidents in the country. Endit
