1st LD: Brussels bomb alert turns out to be hoax

Xinhua, June 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

A bomb alert in a shopping mall in Brussels on Tuesday seemed to be a hoax after a bomb squad found no explosives on site, Belgian broadcaster RTBF reported.

Emergency services and a bomb disposal unit rushed to the City 2 shopping complex in central Brussels. After search and analysis, it appeared that the belt of the suspect was not explosive and no explosive device was found on site.

"The situation is for now under control. We remain vigilant," Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said after an emergency meeting of his security Cabinet.

The incident came days after Belgian authorities raided dozens of houses during the weekend and charged three men with attempted terrorist murder.

The terrorist alert level in Belgium remains unchanged at 3 while security measures are strengthened in important places during the Euro 2016 football games. Endi
