5.4-magnitude earthquake hits NW Pakistan

An earthquake of 5.4 magnitude hit parts of Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Wednesday afternoon, the met office said.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported on its website that the quake's epicentre was determined at Hindukush mountain region near Pakistan-Afghanistan border, with a focal depth of 155 km.

The tremors jolted Swat, Malakand, Mansehra districts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and their adjoining areas.

No loss of life has been immediately reported in the earthquake.

Pakistan is located in one of the most earthquake prone areas with high vulnerability to earthquakes.

Geographically, the country lies in the collision zone of the India tectonic plate to the south and the Eurasian plate to the north. Endit
