China's electricity consumption rose 2.1 percent year on year in May, reaching 473 billion kilowatt hours (kwh), official data showed Wednesday.

In the first five months, power consumption rose 2.7 percent from a year earlier to 2.28 trillion kwh, according to data from the National Energy Administration (NEA).

Over the January to May period electricity use in the service sector and the agricultural sector rose by 9.6 percent year on year respectively, while the industrial sector saw an increase of 0.4 percent, the NEA said.

Meanwhile, China's newly added power capacity hit 42.02 million kwh, including 24.25 million kwh of new thermal power capacity, it said. Endi
