WNBA 1st draft pick Stewart joins WCBA's Shanghai

Xinhua, June 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Chinese Women's Basketball Association (WCBA) league side Shanghai has signed Breanna Stewart, No. 1 draft pick in 2016 from the Seattle Storm of WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), the Chinese club confirmed to Xinhua on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Stewart was selected by the Storm with the top draft pick in 2016. She spent a brilliant four-year collegiate career with the University of Connecticut, where she won four consecutive NCAA champions during 2013-2016 and became the first player to have been named Most Outstanding Player (MOP) of the Final Four four times.

Stewart helped the US women's basketball team to the FIBA world champion in 2014, and has been selected in the final 12-player squad for the Rio Olympics.

Stewart is set to give a huge boost to Shanghai, who lost 3-1 to Beijing in 2015-16 WCBA semifinals, as the team are seeking the title in the new season. Endit
