Olympic velodrome to be ready this month, says Rio 2016 chief

Xinhua, June 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Rio de Janeiro's Olympic velodrome will be ready by the end of June despite the cancellation of the venue's building contract, the head of the Rio 2016 organizing committee said on Thursday.

Rio's city government this week announced that it had rescinded its contract with debt-laden builder Tecnosolo and signed a new deal with Engetecnica to finish the project.

"The city government has been explaining the situation to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)," Rio 2016 chief Carlos Arthur Nuzman told reporters on Thursday. "At the end of June, athletes will be able to train there.

"The government has given guarantees because it is in now in charge of construction. They have signed a contract with a new company and that was clearly explained to the IOC."

The velodrome will host track cycling events during the Olympic Games, which will be held from August 5 to 21.

Located in Rio's southwestern neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca, the facility is the least advanced of the city's Olympic venues. Endit
