Spain's unemployment falls to below 4 mln in May

Xinhua, June 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

The number of people registered as unemployed in Spain from April to May fell below 4 million for the first time since August 2010, standing at 3.89 million, the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security said Thursday.

Meanwhile, unemployment fell by 7.68 percent on a year-on-year basis.

Unemployment fell in all sectors on a month-to-month basis, falling by 2.95 percent in the services sector, 3.57 percent in the construction sector, 6.02 percent in the agriculture sector and 2.52 percent in the industry sector.

The number of unemployed men fell by 3.94 percent to 1.73 million, while the number of unemployed women decreased by 2.20 percent to 2.15 million.

Spain's acting Minister of Employment and Social Security Fatima Banez said the data was very "positive for the Spanish" although she pointed out that there was still work to do in order to improve the country's labor market.

"We recovered 1.5 million of the jobs destroyed by the financial crisis," she said.

The government wants to raise the number of employed people from the current 17.66 million to 20 million, Benez added. Enditem
