Sudan refuses to join regional committee to combat Ugandan LRA

Xinhua, June 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sudan government has refused to take part in a regional committee to combat the Ugandan Lord Resistance Army (LRA) as it is not present on Sudanese territories, Sudan Tribune reported Wednesday.

The report quoted a senior Sudanese source as saying that Khartoum rejected to join the committee after a demand from the Fifth Ministerial Meeting of the Joint Coordination Mechanism of the Regional Cooperation Initiative for the Elimination of the Lord's Resistance Army.

The task of the committee is to determine the areas where the LRA is present and help in arresting its leader Joseph Kony to bring him to stand trial for crimes against humanity.

According to the source, there is no relationship between Sudan and the LRA, particularly after the cessation of South Sudan, where there became no joint border between Sudan and Uganda and thus no presence for the LRA inside the Sudanese territories.

A special envoy of the African Union visited Sudan in last September and met Sudanese government officials and military commanders who denied Sudan's harboring of the LRA leader Joseph Kony.

Earlier Media reports indicated that the LRA leader was present at Kafiya Kanji, one of the disputed areas between Sudan and South Sudan. Endit
