AU, UK to maintain close cooperation on peace, security in Africa

The African Union (AU) and the United Kingdom (UK) have vowed to maintain close cooperation in addressing peace and security challenges in Africa.

Smail Chergui, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, on Wednesday received and held talks with Philip Hammond, the UK Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, said an AU statement.

The two officials have discussed the latest developments in Libya, Somalia, as well as the issue of sustainable and predictable funding for AU-led peace operations, according to the statement.

They have also exchanged views on the fight against Boko Haram and reaffirmed their commitment to stepping up efforts in the fight against the scourge of terrorism.

The AU Commissioner for Peace and Security and the UK Secretary of State have expressed their mutual appreciation for the growth and strengthening of the partnership between the AU and the UK.

They have reiterated the importance for the AU and the UK to maintain close cooperation and coordination in addressing the peace and security challenges on the continent. Endit
