Protests staged in several Croatian cities demanding curricular reform

Xinhua, June 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Thousands of people on Wednesday staged protests in Zagreb and several other cities in Croatia in support for a comprehensive curricular reform, demanding politicians not interfering.

Some 25,000 people, mostly students, teachers and parents, gathered in the Ban Jelacic Square in Zagreb, according to police estimates.

Protests were also held in Osijek, Slavonski Brod, Virovitica, Krizevci, Varazdin, Porec, Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, Korcula, Dubrovnik, local media reported.

The organizer "the Croatia Can Do Better initiative" demanded the continuation of the curricular reform which they said had been stopped due to political pressure and insisted that money be ensured for its implementation.

It also wants experts rather than politicians to have the final say in the process.

Disputes over the curricular reform erupted after the parliamentary Committee on Science and Education decided that the national expert team in charge of the reform should be expanded with 10 new members. It prompted the team announcing a collective resignation last week, saying they would not tolerate political pressure. Endit
