Austrian unemployment increase in May

The Austrian unemployment rate has continued on its upward trend for the month of May climbing 2.5 percent year over year to reach 407,470 people without work.

The figures released by the Public Employment Service Austria (AMS) on Wednesday puts the national unemployment total at 8.6 percent by the domestic calculation method.

By industry, construction saw a positive 8.1 percent unemployment decrease, and part-time workers a 2.8 percent decrease, while the figures were less favorable for trade with a 2.4 percent unemployment increase, and tourism with a 0.3 percent increase.

Across the country, Vienna and Upper Austria recorded the largest unemployment increases of 2.7 percent each, while Tyrol managed a 5.7 percent unemployment decrease, and Salzburg likewise a 4.2 percent decrease.

By Eurostat calculations the domestic unemployment rate for May was 5.8 percent, giving Austria the sixth-lowest rate in the European Union. Endit
