Force Integration Unit (NFIU) in Romania, one of NATO's six small headquarters in eastern Europe, played a critical role in the deployment of rapidly mobile forces in exercise Steadfast Cobalt 16, NATO said Wednesday.
Over 1,000 personnel took part in exercise Steadfast Cobalt 16 from May 22 to June 3 in Romania, which aims to test the deployable communications and information systems used by elements of the NATO Response Force.
The communications staff of the NFIU in Romania have been closely involved with the exercise and observed the preparation and operations of deployable communication assets, according to NATO press release.
The Romanian NFIU is one of six small new headquarters set up last year, as well as in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Lithuania. The units are part of NATO's adaptation plans as the alliance claims it faces increased security challenges in the region.
The NFIUs are expected to be fully operational by NATO Warsaw Summit in July.
NFIU Romanian Commander Colonel Catalin Ticulescu said, "With the vast experience from participating nations on this exercise, my team have been able to refine communication procedures which will closely support the NFIU executing its core functions in any defensive deployment." Endit
