Only three refugees stay in Bulgaria under EU relocation quota: official

Only three refugees are staying in Bulgaria under the relocation scheme which the European Union adopted last September, an official said here on Thursday.

Under the relocation mechanism, Bulgaria committed to accept 1,302 individuals, Petya Parvanova, head of the country's State Agency for Refugees, told a briefing.

Bulgaria has accepted so far four refugees under the relocation scheme, including two from Iraq, and two from Syria, Parvanova said.

However, one of the Iraqis wished to return to his homeland, and the other three people are staying in Bulgaria, she said.

Parvanova added that the accommodation capacity of her agency is 5,130 people but only 18 percent of it is occupied.

Last December, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said the "quota" system for the administration of refugees does not work. Endit
