Rotterdam terror suspect to be extradited to France

Xinhua, May 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The 32-year-old Frenchman Anis B. will be surrendered to French judicial authorities, the International Legal Chamber of the Amsterdam district court decided on Thursday.

The man was arrested on March 27 this year in a house in Rotterdam, after which the French authorities requested his extradition on suspicion of involvement in a criminal terrorist organization, related to the Paris and Brussels attacks, several weapons offenses, fraud, handling stolen goods and forgery.

The counsel of Anis B. thinks that the Frenchman should be prosecuted in the Netherlands because the French request relates to alleged criminal offenses committed in the Netherlands.

However, the Dutch public prosecutor said the prosecution should take place in France since the investigation started in France and the man holds the French nationality.

The counsel argued that her client faces a real risk of inhuman treatment in a French prison and he might face life imprisonment. These arguments were also rejected by the court. According to a court statement there is no evidence that the conditions of detention in France indicate such a danger and would be contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights.

No appeal is possible against the decision. Anis B. will be extradited within 10 days. Endit
