Togo police arrest some 50, seize weapons in operation in Lome

Xinhua, May 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Police in Togo on Wednesday arrested about 50 people and seized weapons and explosives in a "preventive operation" in the capital Lome, an official said Thursday.

Minister of Security and Civil Protection, Colonel Yark Damehame, said in a statement that the hours-long operation was conducted in the districts of Hedzranawoe, Wuiti and Agoe-Zongo.

The police seized "three AK47 weapons with chargers, pistols, war ammunition, explosives and pyrotechnic detonators," as well as a number of vehicles among others, according to the statement.

Damehame said the operation aimed to protect the general public and their assets against a backdrop of increased terror threats in the "sub-region". Endit
