Singapore reports increasing number of measles cases

Xinhua, May 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The number of measles cases reported to Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) this year has increased nearly three times when compared with that in 2015, said MOH in press release on Thursday.

As of May 21, a total of 50 measles cases were reported, as compared to 17 cases in 2015 during the same period, said MOH. Of the total cases reported this year, 40 of them involved Singaporean patients. The authority stressed that 34 of the 40 local cases this year were children.

MOH added that 17 of these children were under the age of one year, who were not due for the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination. While 14 were children between the age of one to six years who had missed their MMR vaccination, and three were children at the age of one who had received only one dose of MMR vaccination.

The authority reminds parents that measles vaccination is compulsory and they should bring their children for vaccination if they have not done so, or missed the vaccination schedule.

Vaccination is the best preventive measure against measles. In Singapore, measles vaccination for children is mandated under the Infectious Diseases Act. Enditem
