Tokyo shares open higher on rising oil prices, firm U.S. stocks

Tokyo shares opened higher Thursday as rising oil prices boosted U.S. stocks overnight.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 142.52 points, or 0.85 percent, from Wednesday to 16,899.87.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 10.23 points, or 0.76 percent, to 1,353.11.

Gainers were led by insurance, mining and rubber product issues. Endit
