The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have signed a memorandum of understanding that will enable Zambians access health services through the Internet and telecommunications, state media reported on Friday.
The 385,000 U.S. dollars deal will result in the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) under mobile health (m-health), a medical and public health practice supported by mobile devices such as mobile phones, patient monitoring devices, personal digital assistants and other wireless devices.
WHO Representative in Zambia Jacob Mufunda said after a signing ceremony that the program would include treating patients, conducting research, educating the health workers, tracking diseases and monitoring public health, according to the Times of Zambia.
Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Peter Mwaba said the objectives of the program were in line with the government's priorities of providing cost-effective quality health coverage to all, increase ICT innovation and infrastructure as well as increase access to advanced referral medical care services.
