Iran's gas output to surpass Qatar in months: report

Iran's natural gas output in the Persian Gulf region will surpass that of Qatar in the coming month, Press TV reported on Friday.

Iran expects a significant production rise from the field it shares with Qatar before March 2017, Ali-Akbar Sha'banpour, the managing director of Pars Oil and Gas Company, said.

Iran's production of natural gas will surpass 500 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) once several ongoing projects are fully developed, Sha'banpour was quoted as saying.

Tehran's current production from the field stands at around 130 mcm/d, as Qatar's production has been at a fixed level of about 177 mcm/d over the past three years, he said.

The South Pars/North Dome field is a natural gas condensate field located in the Persian Gulf. It is the world's largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar.

According to the International Energy Agency, the field holds an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet (51 trillion cubic meters) of in-situ natural gas and some 50 billion barrels of natural gas condensate.

The nuclear agreement reached between the world powers and Iran in July 2015 and was implemented in January has resulted in the lift of sanctions against Iran's energy sector and has raised hopes here to reengage the latter with the global economy. Endit
