Three more Kenyans rescued alive from collapsed building

Xinhua, May 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Three more people were on Thursday evening rescued from the rubble of a residential building in Nairobi's Huruma strata, six days after it collapsed in heavy rains.

Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) said two women and a man were pulled out alive from the debris, bringing the number of people rescued on Thursday to four.

It said the three were in stable conditions and have been rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment as search and rescue operation is underway amid hopes of finding more people alive under the debris of the six-storey building that collapsed on Friday night.

KRCS spokesman Anthony Mwangi said the operation was carefully being carried out as more people were expected to be found alive. This comes after a pregnant middle-aged woman was earlier found alive in the ruins of the collapsed building.

So far 36 people have been reported dead while over 70 occupants of the ill-fated building are still missing after the collapse of the building last Friday. Those who have been rescued stand at 140.

However, the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) Incident Commander Pius Masai said only seven of the bodies have been identified.

Masai said the identification exercise has been slowed down by the low turn-out of relatives. He said close to 80 occupants of the ill-fated house are still missing and believed to be trapped under the collapsed structure.

Kenya's military rescue team had earlier stated that they would seek to finalize the rescue operations by Friday. Endit
