Burkina Faso denies reports of attempted entry into military prison

Xinhua, April 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Burkina Faso military authorities on Monday denied reports on social media about alleged forceful entry on Sunday night into the country's military prison where perpetrators of last year's failed coup are being held.

"In reality, it was just warning shots fired at two individuals who were near the prison walls. The two individuals ignorantly trespassed into a prohibited zone," a statement from the military authorities said.

"For the security of everyone, we urge the population living near military camps to strictly adhere to laid down security measures," the statement continued.

It is at this prison where General Gilbert Diendere who was behind the Sept. 16, 2015 failed coup, as well as many of his accomplices, have been detained.

Last year, an operation to free coup plotters from the military prison was foiled by the transition government.

In January 2016, Burkinabe's transition authorities accused some soldiers close to Diendere of having attacked Yimdi arms depot in the west of the capital, Ouagadougou. Enditem
