Deputy UAE defense chief meets U.S. Central Command commander

A senior official of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) held talks here Monday with visiting high-ranking U.S. general over enhancing their bilateral relations, UAE state news agency WAM reported.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, discussed with U.S. four-star general Joseph Votel, who now serves as Commander of United States Central Command, on the "friendship and cooperation between the UAE and the U.S., and ways to enhance them," the report said.

The U.S. supports the Saudi-led coalition, including the UAE, in the ongoing military campaign against Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen, where the coalition aims to re-install the "legitimate" government under President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

The United States and the UAE, a major oil supplier, are traditional close political allies, and the U.S. navy fleet in the Persian Gulf regularly docks at UAE ports. Endit
