Xinhua, April 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

The man who caused a major security alert on Tuesday night at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport appeared to be a drunk Polish citizen claiming to be a terrorist, the Dutch military police stated on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old man was arrested by the military police around 9:30 p.m.local time (1930 GMT) at Schiphol Plaza, the airport shopping center, on Tuesday. He is still in custody and his case was transferred to the Dutch public prosecutor.

Interrogation on Wednesday showed that the man made his remarks under influence of alcohol. According to the military police, the man was homeless, but his lawyer claimed he had worked abroad, and was planning to go back to his house in Poland but missed his flight.

The "suspicious situation" led to an evacuation of part of the airport for hours.

The Dutch Explosive Ordnance Disposal investigated two bags of the suspect, but no explosives were found and at around 1:40 a.m. the area was given all clear by the military police. The situation did not affect air traffic. Endit
