Over 100 rebels killed in Syria's Aleppo in 24 hours

Xinhua, April 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Over 100 rebels have been killed over the past 24 hours in the northern province of Aleppo, pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV reported on Wednesday.

The rebels were killed during battles with Syrian government forces in the southern countryside of Aleppo.

The oppositional Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebel-held areas in southern Aleppo were subject to heavy shelling by the Syrian air force.

It reportedly added that the government shelling killed at least 26 rebels.

Battles have recently raged in southern Aleppo, following two attempts by the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front to attack government-controlled areas in Aleppo.

The Syrian government deemed the attacks, which occurred last week, as a violation to the currently holding truce in some parts of the country.

The Nusra Front is excluded from the U.S.-Russian brokered truce, but it's alliances with other rebel factions that were meant to be included in the truce made things worse and threatened the cease-fire as the army found itself obliged to return the attacks. Endit
