The following are the highlights of Zambia's major media outlets on Wednesday.

-- The African Union (AU) has praised Zambian President Edgar Lungu for his exemplary leadership qualities.

AU Presiding officer and head of Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOC) Joseph Chilengi said Lungu is a highly respected, trusted and credible leader and that this could be seen by Zambia's credibility rating on international diplomacy in the last two years which has skyrocketed. -- Students from Zambia's highest university have welcomed the government's announcement that it will continue paying meal allowances for students whom it is sponsoring.

University of Zambia Students Union president Jones Mwew said students were happy with the announcement that the government would continue paying the allowance, saying this was a relief for the students.

Last month, the government decided to stop paying meal allowances at two public universities, the University of Zambia in Lusaka, the country's capital and the Copperbelt University in the Copperbelt Province on grounds that the process has been abused in the past.

But on Tuesday, the government rescinded the decision. (TIMES OF ZAMBIA)

-- Media bodies in Zambia have petitioned the government and the state broadcaster in the Constitutional Court over unfair and biased news coverage by the public broadcaster.

Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Chapter and the Press Freedom Committee of the Post have petitioned the Attorney General and the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation over unfair and biased coverage of political players by the public broadcaster.

According to the petition, the public broadcaster has failed to provide equal coverage of all political players and that it was giving the governing party more coverage at the expense of other players. (THE POST)

-- The Zambian government said its social cash transfer program has managed to reduce extreme poverty in the country by five percent.

Stanford Michelo, Ministry of Community Development social welfare director said over 800,000 Zambians from 78 districts were currently benefiting from the social cash transfer program which has resulted in the welfare of the beneficiaries improving greatly.

The beneficiaries have been investing the monies that they receive from social welfare in income generating activities. (ZAMBIA DAILY MAIL) Endit
