Guinea Bissau ruling party accepts Supreme Court verdict on suspended MPs

Xinhua, April 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Guinea Bissau's ruling party, African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), on Thursday said it would accept and respect the Supreme Court ruling on suspension and removal from parliament of 15 rebel parliamentarians elected on its ticket.

Addressing the press in Bissau, PAIGC president Domingos Simoes Pereira said respect for laws and decisions of competent organs was not an option for PAIGC, but an obligation which the party will accomplish.

However, he added, the party will ask for clarification from the Supreme Court about the issue of independent parliamentarians because the 15 were expelled from PAIGC and should they return to parliament, they will have no party.

The 15 parliamentarians were expelled from parliament and replaced by other PAIGC members, after they voted against the government program proposed by Prime Minister Carlos Correia who belongs to the same party.

The controversy led to the suspension of parliamentary business for three months and delay in adoption of government budget. Endit
