The number of reported red tides declined in 2015, a report from the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said Friday.
China reported a total of 35 red tides in 2015, down 38 percent from the year before, according to the report on the marine environment.
Red tides happen when microscopic algae reproduce at an explosive rate. The algae can produce toxins that are harmful for fish, manatees and even humans.
The report said red tides affected more than 2,800 sq km, compared with about 7,300 sq km in 2014.
Meanwhile, the report revealed that some offshore areas were heavily polluted.
It added the quality of sea water near 88 percent of pollution discharge points along the coast failed to meet environmental requirements.
The administration has set up about 11,000 stations to monitor red tides, sea water quality, marine biodiversity and other indicators, according to the report. Endit
