69 students released in Myanmar

Xinhua, April 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sixty-nine students were released from Tharyawaddy Prison in Myanmar's Bago region after a township court closed their cases, local sources said.

The release of such students facing trial connected with politics is the first after the new government took office.

However, three student leaders were not included in the release as they will continue to face trials by a Yangon Court in connection with their case for leading student protest in Yangon last year against an education law, sources said.

The initial release of students of such category came a day after newly-appointed Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi pledged to try her utmost to seek for the release of political prisoners on the occasion of the upcoming Myanmar new year falling on mid-April. Endit
