Turkish military strikes PKK targets

Xinhua, April 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Turkish warplanes hit targets of the outlawed Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq on Thursday and Friday, the military said in a written statement.

Turkish airforces stroke the PKK targets in southeastern Tunceli province on Thursday and hit the group's positions in southeastern Hakkari province early Friday, said the statement released by the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces.

A military operation against the PKK is continuing in the rural areas of Tunceli, local NTV broadcaster reported on Friday.

The military also hit PKK targets in Qandil Mountain region in northern Iraq on early Friday, destroying ammunition depots, bunkers and shelters, according to the statement.

On Thursday, five Turkish soldiers and one special forces police officer were killed in PKK attacks in Nusaybin town of Mardin province, private Dogan News Agency reported late Thursday.

Over 300 members from Turkey's security forces and thousands of PKK members were killed since last July during armed confrontations inside Turkey and in northern Iraq where the PKK are based.

Ankara holds the PKK responsible for waging a separatist war since 1984.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. Endit
