Refugee arrivals in Slovenia most likely stopped

Xinhua, April 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Refugee arrivals to Slovenia have almost completely stopped after the closure of the Balkan route a month ago, Slovenian police statistics show.

There are presently 368 migrants in Slovenia, among whom 13 people have so far been granted refugee status and six were secured subsidiary protection, the police report said.

Asylum applications have been filed by 633 people since mid-September of last year. Of those, 271 have been processed, with 180 of the cases terminated after the applicants left their asylum center, 46 applications have been rejected as unjustified.

Among the 13 applications granted, six had been filed by citizens of Iran, five by Iraqis and two by Syrians. Subsidiary protection has been secured for three Syrians and three Afghani minors.

Afghani citizens top the list when it comes to the number of asylum applications, with 202 filed, followed by Syrians (136), Iraqis (109) and Iranians (69).

A great majority of the migrants currently hosted are accommodated in the three centers for foreigners in Ljubljana.

The numbers are not expected to rise significantly, as only 67 foreigners have been caught crossing the border illegally since the refugee route was decisively closed on March 5. More than half of them were from safe countries. Endit
