Six people died on the spot on Monday while seven others sustained serious injuries when a bus they were traveling overturned in central Zambia's Kapiri district.

Among the deceased were four females and two minors aged one and two years while another juvenile died on the way to the hospital, according to Zambia police assistant public relations officer Esther Katongo.

She said seven of the passengers sustained serious injuries while 51 suffered minor injuries.

According to the police spokesperson, the accident occurred when the driver of the bus, which was coming from Chililabombwe town in the Copperbelt Province to Lusaka, the country's capital, lost control due to lack of concentration, forcing it to overturn.

The driver has since been arrested and charged with six counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

According to the country's road safety agency, the preliminary investigations have established that the section of the road where the accident occurred was a curvy stretch with a speed limit of 80 km/hour and that the road was clearly marked and smooth. Endit
