Nigerian female wrestlers qualify for Rio Olympics

Xinhua, April 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Nigeria has announced the qualification of four female wrestlers for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The female wrestlers are Blessing Oborududu (63kg), Mercy Genesis (48kg), Aminat Adeniyi (58kg) and Hannah Reuben (69kg).

President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Daniel Igali told reporters in Lagos, the country's economic hub on Sunday that the female wrestlers qualified for the finals of the ongoing Africa Oceania Olympic qualifiers in Algiers and have automatically qualified for the Olympics.

The four female wrestlers are to be joined by Odunayo Adekuoroye, who had earlier qualified by winning a bronze medal in the 53kg category at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas.

Igali said he was delighted with the development and was hopeful that the men would also replicate the feat.

According to him, morale was high among the wrestlers and expectations were high that they would do well in their fights and make the country proud. Endit
