London Olympic champion Ye Shiwen only managed a seventh-finish in her signature event 400m individual medley at the National Swimming Championships, which also serves as Olympic trials, here on Sunday.
It seems that Ye is unlikely to defend her title in Rio as she just timed 4:50.74 in the final with stomach pain.
Shanghai's Zhou Min was the fastest and took the gold in 4:36.97, seventh fastest time in the world so far this year. Wang Xinya and Xu Danlu followed with 4:42.45 and 4:45.57.
In the men's 400m medley, Zhejiang native Wang Shun led throughout the final and won in 4:13.62. Wang is a medal hope in the event for China at the Rio Games. He took a bronze in the 200m at the Kazan World Championships last year.
Tianjin's An Jiabao and Shanghai's Wang Zhou came second and third respectively.
In the men's 400m freestyle, Shanghai's Qiu Ziao won the gold with the absence of star swimmer Sun Yang. Qiu set his new personal best of 3:47.99, which ranked seventh in the world so far this year.
Shanghai also won the women's 4x100m freestyle relay in 3:40.69.
A national record was smashed on Sunday, as Chinese Navy's Wang Lizhuo timed 59.64 in the men's 100m breaststroke semis. Wang's time ranked third in the world.
The National Championships will run from April 3 to 10 in South China's Foshan city.
