Two killed in Tanzania mine pit collapse

Xinhua, April 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Two people died and three others injured after an illegal mine pit collapsed late Saturday in Tanzania's lake zone region of Geita, police said on Sunday.

Geita Regional Police Commander Mponjoli Mwabulambo confirmed said the accident occurred at around 4:00 p.m. Saturday when the five people were inside the mine pit located in Busaka village, Chato District.

He said ongoing rains in the lake zone regions have softened walls of the mine pit, causing the mine to collapse.

Chato District Commissioner, Shaaban Ntarambe, announced to close down the mine site.

Geita is in the centre of a gold mining area in Tanzania. It is a home of Geita Gold Mine, which is being operated by AngloGold Ashanti. Endit
