Albania to reopen airport in Kukes

Xinhua, April 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Albanian Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Edmond Haxhinasto on Friday announced Kukes airport in northeast Albania would reopen after several years.

During a media conference, Haxhinasto said "It's a very important day for Albanian civil aviation because Kukes airport will be soon operational," adding it would permit the most competitive prices in the region.

According to Haxhinasto, the opening of Kukes airport will create about 200 new jobs. The Albanian government is planning to open another airport in the south of the country and a feasibility study is underway.

The agreement of the opening of Kukes airport will enter into force after being adopted by the Albanian Council of Ministers and then by the parliament.

Kukes Airport, named Shaikh Zayed, is an airport about 3.5 km south of Kukes city, northeast Albania. Construction works for the airport finished in 2006, but it never became operational due to international flights exclusively flying to Albania's main international airport in Tirana. Enditem
