The Africa Union peacekeeping forces have vowed to intensify military attacks against Al-Shabaab militants to ensure peace prevails in the Horn of Africa nation.
AMISOM's Uganda Sector 1 Commander Brig. Sam Okiding said the forces serving in the pan Africa body are making preparations for a sustained fight against Al-Shabaab, as the militants have suffered heavy losses in the past week in the north and central regions.
"With the help of the fresh gallant fighters, we are going to put pressure on Al-Shabaab and defeat them to enable Somalis to enjoy peace and stability," Okiding said on late Wednesday when he received a fresh battle group from Uganda, serving under AMISOM.
According to a statement from AMISOM, Okiding said the necessary preparations for a sustained fight have been finalized.
Uganda is one of the five countries that contribute troops to AMISOM. The others are Ethiopia, Burundi, Kenya and Djibouti.
The AMISOM forces have increased airstrikes in southern Somalia recently, killing more than 50 militants in the last two weeks.
The Ugandan group replaces another, which is rotating out after completing one year tour of duty. The returning group has been operating in Arbiska.
"We have already put together a force and things are going to be better for the peace loving residents in Somalia. We will ensure that we defeat Al-Shabaab," said Okiding, pledging to up the offensive against the Al-Shabaab with the new battle group. Endit
