Major news items in leading Zambian media outlets on Thursday

Xinhua, March 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

The following are news highlights of Zambia's major media outlets on Thursday.

-- A court in Zambia has dismissed a petition that was challenging the constitutionality of holding the 2016 presidential elections as well as determining President Edgar Lungu's tenure of office after the January 20, 2015 presidential election.

The petitioners had requested the court to defer the 2016 presidential election to 2020 to allow Lungu finish a five-year term of office. The court dismissed the petition, saying the petitioners lacked the merit to bring the matter before the court. Lungu became Zambia's sixth president after winning the January 2015 presidential election necessitated by the death of President Michael Sata. (DAILY NATION)

-- Mopani Copper Mines Plc, a unit of Australia's Glencore, said it has set aside 1.1 billion U.S. dollars to complete the construction of three mine shafts at its operations in Zambia.

Johan Jansen, the company's chief executive officer said the funds will help it complete the construction of the new Synclinorium, Mindolo and Mufulira Deep shafts, which would further boost job creation. The mining firm, he said, was committed to the future of its operations in Zambia. (TIMES OF ZAMBIA) Endit
