German federal police work 2.7 mln extra hours amid refugee influx: report

Xinhua, March 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Due to the huge influx of refugees, German federal police officers accumulated 2.7 million hours of overtime from September until the end of February, German newspaper Die Welt reported on Tuesday.

The figures originated as a response of the German government to a parliamentary question by the Green Party, according to the newspaper.

Based on the information from German security sources, German federal police have been working extra hours since the government decided to reinstate border checks in September 2015 due to the increased influx of refugees.

The German police union GdP has also complained about the heavy workload of officials.

Approximately 40,000 German federal police had already accumulated half a million hours of overtime after the reintroduction of border controls within one month, said GdP.

Despite border controls, the tasks of German federal police also include securing railway stations, airports, demonstrations, football matches as well as foreign missions.

The German government has promised that federal police will receive 3,000 additional external staff this year. Endit
