Xinhua, March 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

For Germany, 2015 was characterized by unusually high immigration of foreigners, with nearly 2 million coming to Germany, according to provisional results presented by the German Federal Statistical Office, or Destatis, on Monday.

Immigration in 2015 was up 49 percent from 2014.

At the same time, the number of foreigners leaving Germany increased over 2014 by 12 percent to roughly 860,000.

Consequently, net migration of foreign people amounted to 1.14 million in 2015, the highest record in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Following an unprecedented influx of more than 1 million asylum seekers in 2015, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has come under increased criticism from allied and opposition lawmakers for her open-door policy towards refugees. Endit
