Hamburg's Josip Drmic ruled out for the rest of the season

Xinhua, March 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Hamburg's Josip Drmic has suffered a knee injury, which keeps him out of action for the remainder of the season, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Hamburg striker sustained the injury in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen at the 26th round of Bundesliga. According to the club's statement, Drmic suffered a "traumatic cartilage damage", which will require a surgery. He will thus miss the rest of the season.

"Today is a sad day for me as I have been diagnosed with a cartilage damage in my knee, which will sideline me for a long time. You all can imagine that it is hard for me to stay optimistic now. Nevertheless, I will fight back to return to the pitch as soon as possible," Drmic said in personal statement.

However, to make things worse, the Switzerland international will not only miss the rest of the Bundesliga season but also the UEFA EURO 2016 in France. Josip Drmic is the current top scorer of the national team after providing eight goals in 25 caps overall.

"That is a bitter injury blow and a great loss for the national team as well as Hamburg," Switzerland's national coach Vladimir Petkovic said in a statement via the Swiss FA.

Josip Drmic joined Hamburg from Monchengladbach on loan, to stay until the end of the season. The striker plays since 2014 in the German Bundesliga and wore also the jerseys of Nuremberg and Bayer Leverkusen. He made overall 77 Bundesliga appearances and scored 25 goals ever since.

His current club Hamburg sits on the 12th place of the standings and clashes with Hoffenheim at the 27th round on Saturday. Endit
