Indian university panel recommends expulsion of "seditious" students

A panel nominated by India's prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to probe its students facing sedition charges has recommended expulsion of five students including their union president Kanhaiya Kumar, local media reported on Tuesday.

Kumar was arrested last month allegedly for shouting "anti-national" slogans at an event organized in the university campus to mark hanging anniversary of the 2001 Indian parliament attack convict Mohammed Afzal Guru.

"A high-level committee of JNU has recommended rustication of Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and two other students for their alleged role in a controversial event on campus on February 9," an official said.

"The panel has found the students guilty of violating norms inside the university."

Though Kumar was released on bail earlier this month, Khalid and Bhattacharya remain in custody.

Sedition as per Indian law amounts to inciting people to oppose their government. The maximum punishment for sedition in India is life imprisonment. Endit
