Xinhua, March 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Fighting between government forces and Taliban militants on a highway in Afghan northern Jauzjan province claimed the lives of three militants on Monday, said deputy to provincial police chief Abdul Hafiz Khashi.

"The clash erupted after a group of Taliban militants targeted a highway linking Jauzjan provincial capital Shiberghan to Mazar-e-Sharif, capital of the neighboring Balkh province, in the wee hours of Monday and security forces retaliated killing three rebels," Khashi told Xinhua.

Shiberghan-Mazar-e-Sharif highway is regarded as the safest road in the conflict-ridden country.

Security forces also seized a vehicle of militants with good quantity of arms and ammunitions during the firefight, which lasted for a while, the official added.

Taliban militants who are active in parts of Jauzjan province are yet to make comment. Endit
