Singapore Design Week (SDW), which is entering into the third edition with over 100 design events, was officially opened on Thursday by Singapore's Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim.
Organized by the DesignSingapore Council (Dsg), this year's SDW is packed with events and activities including interactive design installations, trade shows and exhibitions, lifestyle events and craft workshops, as well as thought- provoking sharing and discussions.
Minister Yaacob Ibrahim graced the opening ceremony and announced "Design 2025" Masterplan at the National Design Center. He said "Design 2025" Masterplan envisions a "Singapore by Design" which is for the city state to be an innovation-driven economy and loveable city.
As design is a tool for innovation intrinsically and good design improves the quality of life, Yaacob Ibrahim stressed that Singapore will promote the adoption of design in business, strengthen the competitiveness of design firms, bring design into the community, infuse design into the country's National Skillset and develop Singapore's design brand.
A key highlight in this year's SDW is the inaugural "Innovation by Design" conference, which attracts top design leaders and chiefs of design-led businesses. They will reveal their design and innovative journey through a series of presentations at the creative symposium.
Dsg's first "Design and Make Fair" at the National Design Center is also attractive. It's a unique hands-on platform for the public to try their hand at designing and creating their own products with craft and traditional materials. Participants are also able to view the inspirations of Singapore designers and makers through a showcase.
Besides, the public can also experience other mainstays such as Design Trails, SingaPlural, MAISON & OBJET ASIA 2016, International Furniture Fair Singapore 2016, among others. This year's SDW will last until March 20. Endit
