Extreme-right party success in Slovakia linked to high unemployment: institute

Xinhua, March 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

There's a connection between the results of Saturday's general election in Slovakia and the unemployment rate in the regions, the head of the Slovakia Employment Institute Michal Palenik said on Thursday.

In an interview with Tablet.TV, Palenik said the extreme-right Kotleba-People's Party Our Slovakia gained strong support in regions with jobless rates higher than the Slovak average and in districts with unemployment rates well above 20 percent such as Roznava, Poltar and Kezmarok.

"Many voters were frustrated with the fact that the situation in terms of their employment hadn't changed much over the past five or 10 years. People from regions like this have no chance of finding a job. They are frustrated. Politicians who haven't improved their situation for four years will find it difficult to persuade them that it will be better now," he said.

Kotleba's party had strong support in the Banska Bystrica region in central Slovakia, where he is the chairman. Enditem
