Trade union membership to cover 140 mln migrant workers

Xinhua, March 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Some 15 million migrant workers are expected to join Chinese trade unions this year, a national trade union leader said on Wednesday.

Li Yufu, deputy chair of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, said meeting the target would make the trade unions have 140 million migrant workers, or a half of all migrant workers.

At the end of 2014, migrant workers totaled 274 million in China. After 15 million migrant workers joined the trade unions last year, Li said, the total number of such members exceeded 120 million.

Migrant workers refer to rural residents who work in cities, often far away from their home villages.

Covering more migrant workers is the first step, said Li, who expects trade unions in developed areas, for example Shanghai, to issue cards on which list services and benefits provided to member migrant workers. Endi
