Spain's housing sales fall by 2.9 pct in Jan.

Spanish housing sales fell by 2.9 percent in January when compared with the same month of a year earlier, according to data published on Tuesday by Spain's Statistical Office (INE).

The INE reported that 32,417 operations were registered in the first month of the year, with sales of new houses falling by 28.9 percent year-on-year to a total of 6,334 purchases and sales of second-hand houses increasing by 6.6 percent to 26,038 purchases.

89.7 percent of the purchases were non-subsidized houses, whose sales fell by 2 percent in January year-on-year to a total of 29,093 purchases, the INE said, while 10.3 percent were subsidized houses, whose purchases fell by 9.9 percent to 3,324 operations.

Housing sales had been increasing for 16 consecutive months year-on-year until Jan. 2016. Purchases suffered big falls since 2008 because of the economic crisis and started recovering in 2014. Endit
